Sankeien Garden

Sankeien Garden

This garden was designed and built by Hara Sankei and opened in 1906. Ten of the buildings in the garden have been declared Important Cultural Property by Japan.

On this day the goal was to visit the Sankeien Garden in Yokohama. It was an overcast day with threatening rain that never came. The grounds were beautiful. Thoughtful design, meticulously kept flora, and historical structures coalesced into an oasis of the senses. It really was an isolated sanctuary in a busy port city. I took plenty of photos during my time here but this one was my last (and favorite). On the way out of the garden I passed the main pond. Near the center was an old boat anchored in place. It provided a nice aesthetic. Just before turning to leave for good and large Cormorant swooped across the pond and perched up on the boat. “Oo nice” I thought as I prepared my camera and clicked. Three seconds after the bird left the scene as did I.
